Seneste mail modtaget d. 19. Januar 2023 fra Mehretab, der havde været på besøg på børnehjemmet:

I have been at HAB yesterday. The children and staff are doing well despite the horrible conditions all Tigreans have endured in the past two years.

Currently, there are 53 resident children in HAB.  Ten rehabilitated children are also getting food service only in HAB. In addition to the money you sent, Fikre is getting limited amount of food aid from some local NGOs and Aid distributed by government. He has been buying food on loan basis before you send him money and had been in great trouble and worries.

The garden is also in a better management condition this year. They are growing potato, onion, cabbage, lettuce, swiss chard and maize which would be helpful to the center.

The children are still out of school. But those from grade 1-6  were learning last year (from Feb-July 2022) for a compensation since the corona pandemic in 2020 second semester (2019/20 academic year) and first semester of 2020/21 academic year. Then it was again closed due to the third phase of the war that erupted on August 2022 until now. In short, they were able to learn for  six months only in the past three years. But it remains closed for those above grade seven. We hope schools to open next month.

In terms of documentation, I have updated the contact information of the children with photos, list of children since 2016 until now and list of rehabilitated children since 2014 ( to be updated further).

Fikre has repaired the grain miller machines and rented it. The person who rented the millers has covered the cost of maintenance to be accounted on the rent.

Audit report for 2021 and 2022 is on progress and hope to be finalized after 2 weeks.

Fikre was able to send Mamit Haftu ( the one who lost two of her legs) to Germany for better medical care by communicating Tigrean diaspora in Germany. She has been there for one year (2021/22) and now returned to Addis Ababa getting modern artificial legs and medical treatment. She is trying for a scholarship with the help of the diaspora in Germany who were supporting her.

Two youngsters have joined Tigray Defence Forces (TDF) on their own will and decision. Fikre was trying to protect the other children from joining TDF when asked by the authorities for those who are above 18. They didn’t force him though. Additional seven rehabilitated youngsters have also joined the army.

Commercial bank and Awash bank haven’t started service yet. But Fikre told me that the manager of Awash have promised him to withdraw money if it arrived in Addis Ababa.

I will send you the updated list of the children when I have access to better internet connection. I am sending this from my phone which has slow connection.

Feel free if you have questions for further clarifications or other issues to be addressed.

Best regards,
Mehretab
